The Dick Test in relation to the presence of the Streptococcus Haemolyticus in the Throats of Individuals not suffering from Scarlet Fever.

چکیده

It was resolved, therefore, to ascertain whether S. hIrnolyticus could be found in the throat cultures of those who were )ick positive, and further to determine whether the various strains could be separated into scarlatinal and non-scarlatinal types. As it has already been shown (Smith, 1926, 1927, Griffith, 1926, James, 1926) that scarlatinal types cannot be distinguished by agglutination and agglutinin-absorption tests from strains of hxemolvtic streptococci occurring in other infections, the various strains were tested for their power to produce a true exotoxin, and tests were muade to determine if the exotoxins were neutralised by scarlatinal horse-antitoxin.

Observations on the Presence of a Toxic Substance in the Blood and Urine of Patients with Scarlet Fever

A series of observations on the blood of patients acutely ill with scarlet fever has shown that a toxic substance can be demonstrated in the serum by means of intracutaneous injections of the serum in persons who have not had scarlet fever and whose serums fail to blanch the rash in scarlet fever. The reaction caused by this substance consists of a bright red local erythema, varying from 20 to ...

Studies upon Minute Hemolytic Streptococci

1. Minute beta hemolytic streptococci were found to occur from one-third to one-half as frequently in normal individuals as do ordinary beta hemolytic streptococci. 2. They were rarely isolated from the rhinopharynges of individuals suffering from chronic disease. 3. In acute respiratory tract infection other than that due to the ordinary beta hemolytic streptococcus the incidence of minute str...

Studies on the Biology of Streptococcus

1. Hemolytic streptococcus has been found in 100 per cent of the throats of patients with scarlet fever during the 1st week of the disease. 2. The average length of time that these organisms are present in the throat varies from 10 to 20 days. 3. No morphological or cultural characteristics peculiar to the hemolytic streptococcus from scarlet fever can be demonstrated. 4. Ten immune sera have b...

Group a Hemolytic Streptococcus Antibodies. I. Griffith Type Agglutinin and Antistreptolysin Titers in Normal Men and in Acute Infections.

The immunological phenomena associated with various aspects of hemolytic streptococcus disease in man have usually been studied by the measurement of antitoxins. Most extensive have been the observations made by the Dick technique (1), in which purified erythrogenic toxin was used as a skin test material. Circulating antistreptolysin and antifibrinolysin titers have also been determined, partic...
